Shrimad Rajchandra self-realisation centre

Uttarakhand , Almora, India

Year: 2020

Competition | Housing | Institutional

This was a competition for designing a self-realisation centre. The site had a natural spring whose water cut though the site. At the origin of the spring the shrine was placed and at the other end a terraced plaza, both of these became anchors connected by the stream. The public plaza became the space to which all the public buildings opened. The main idea was to develop a journey in the form of a walkway along the stream between the shrine and the public plaza. Traversing which would become a daily ritual, which symbolically represented the kind of navigation between ones inner and outer life one must partake in as a part of society, and the role of nature (the streams and the landscape) in that.
